8 movies to watch that won’t cost you a penny

Every week, we put together a list of free movies to watch on The Roku Channel. This week, we included a Jack Black film that turned into a Broadway show, a film adaptation of a New York Times bestseller, and a charming rom-com starring the unlikely duo of Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

– School of Rock (2003) – After being kicked out of a rock band, Dewey Finn becomes a substitute teacher of a strict elementary private school, only to try and turn it into a rock band. Starring Jack Black and Mike White.

Why it made our list: With a killer soundtrack and a leading cast of comedy heavy hitters (Silverman and Black), School of Rock gets an A+.

– Death at a Funeral (2007) – Chaos ensues when a man tries to expose a dark secret regarding a recently deceased patriarch of a dysfunctional British family. Starring Matthew Macfayden and Peter Dinklage.

Why it made our list: We bet you’ll be laughing out loud for at least half of this 90 minute dark comedy.

– Home of the Brave (2006) – Three soldiers struggle to readjust to life at home after returning home from a lengthy tour in Iraq. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and 50 Cent.

Why it made our list: This isn’t your typical “war movie” – Home of the Brave spends more time focusing on the psychological effects of soldiers after they return home.

– Man on a Ledge (2012) – As a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion. Starring Sam Worthington and Elizabeth Banks.

Why it made our list: The plot twists will keep your palms sweating all the way up until the unexpected ending.

– Black Snake Moan (2006) – A God-fearing bluesman takes to a wild young woman who, as a victim of childhood sexual abuse, looks everywhere for love, never quite finding it. Starring Christina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson.

Why it made our list: Standout performances by both Jackson and Ricci make Black Snake Moan well worth watching.

– The Kite Runner (2007) – After spending years in California, Amir returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend Hassan, whose son is in trouble. Starring Khalid Abdalla and Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada.

Why it made our list: It’s a New York Times bestselling book turned outstanding feature film about friendship and betrayal.

– Bewitched (2005) – Thinking he can overshadow an unknown actress in the part, an egocentric actor unknowingly gets a witch cast in an upcoming television remake of the classic sitcom Bewitched. Starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

Why it made our list: Nicole Kidman delivers the charm, while Will Ferrell delivers the laughs in this rom-com remake of the popular 1960s sitcom.

The Man in the Moon (1991) – A coming of age story set in the South of USA when Elvis was King. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Sam Waterston.

Why it made our list: In her debut role, Reese Witherspoon delivers a brilliant performance in a coming of age film that showcases the bond between two sisters.
