hey guys real quick before we get started two things first of all when I shot this video I thought the TD o2g which is the overseas model with DST on it was the same as the US second gen xgt after I got everything shot I realized it wasn’t so I’m going to have it in a future video but it is missing from the lineup today second of all I shot most of this footage about nine months ago so when I say brand new you know it’s probably pushing a year old as of this video being posted newly so just wanted to let you know we’ll get right into the video hey friends Jim here with Philly fixed I’m super excited because I’m going to compare the brand new TD 173d impact driver from Makita that is not out in the US yet to all of these other impact drivers so the TD 173d is only available uh from the Japan Market I ordered this on eBay uh and I’m going to compare it to these other models now one thing I want to note Makita at least in their us and I believe their overseas model numbers they number them in the sequence they were released so most brands higher numbers means higher tier Tool uh with Makita it’s really just chronological so we’ve got the xdt11 here this is the only brushed model among the models I have and it’s the oldest we got the xdt13 which is a base brushless model with no speeds or modes or anything like that we’ve got the xdt14 with that comes three speeds and a self-tapping mode as well uh then you’ve got the xdt16 which up until relatively recently was the flagship 18vt model uh but then I believe in 2022 it was replaced by the xdt 19 uh but I’ve also got the TD 171d which is the Japanese Market equivalent of the xdt 19 and then the new flagship top-of-the line again not available in the United States is the TD 173d it stands apart from all of the other models because it has the light ring on the front which I’m a huge fan of uh skill has had that on some of their tools for a while glad to see Makita adopted it it’s also got the control panel on the back and it kind of shifts the battery mount back so that the top is centered on this handle you can see I think they’re trying to make the body shorter without the battery hitting the work piece then moving on to the 40 volt line we’ve got the gdt o1 which was the first xgt Model to come out and then we’ve got the brand new gd02 anyway we’re going to do a whole bunch of tests see how these compare and see which one is the right one for you let’s get to it oh [Music] pretty much neck and neck after the xdt14 let’s see if the TD 173d which is not yet available in the US can really impress here not really a breakout performance from the purple model let’s move on to the 40 volt coming in second to last behind the brushed model and barely ahead of the sub compact if you watched my first video featuring the impact driver when it was released in 2021 this probably comes as no surprise the chance for Redemption here though with the relatively new gd2 40 volt model released with virtually no announcement in the US nothing too special here from the Gen 2 xgt but there’ll be a chance for Redemption coming up on the next two tests for now let’s see where we stand on the deck screws that really represents the bread and butter of impact drivers and surprisingly the mid-tier xdt14 comes out on top although not really by any significant margin over the xdt16 the Japanese equivalent TD 171 the xdt 19 or the overseas only model TD 173 those 40 volt models just really not performing well on par with the budget xdt13 and the lackluster Sub Compact up next we’re going to drive 10-in headlock structural Fasteners into multiple layers of pressure treated lumber something I was actually doing last summer when rebuilding my deck [Music] no Che [Music] [Music] those 40 volt models finally keeping up but again that mid-tier xdt14 punching above its weight and the latest us 18vt model the xt19 coming out on top this time the subc compact still sucks last chance for all these to impress let’s bust some nuts [Music] [Music] [Music] to all right that was well past the amount of time so I don’t think that counts [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] quite frankly a little bit weird that the old 134 and6 are coming out 50 foot lbs ahead of the 19 and the 173d I guess we’ll see how these 40 volt models [Music] do okay now we’re going to try 375 with a 4 amp hour battery on the gd01 okay we’re moving up to the bow Malloy grade nine 41.6 let’s give it a CH shot with the 21700 cell 4 amp hour the 40 volt models coming out on top on this test the gd1 requiring the 4 amp hour battery with 21700 cells to get to 375 while the gd2 got there with the 2.5 amp hour and didn’t really get any benefit from that 4 amp hour the xdt 18 lagging far behind as in the other tests the xdt 11 uh really falling behind for the first time in this test it did okay in the other ones uh and again those newer 18vt models all at 300 ft-lbs falling behind the 350 ft-lbs of the older xdt models all right so I’m going to put my rankings on the screen uh in just a second but first I kind of want to explain them basically I took the nut busting torque I divided it by 25 because I really don’t want that to be weighted heavily in the rankings you really shouldn’t be using these for that type of applic um so you know I divide by 25 and I put that on top of a fraction because higher is better and then I took the 10-in headlock score time and the deck screwdriving times I put those on the bottom of a fraction because lower is better higher scores are better right so higher nut busting on top of a fraction is higher lower times to drive the other Fasteners lower is better on the bottom of fraction drives the score up okay and then as far as the headlocks um I multip I sorry I divided that by two because uh lower is better but I also wanted that to be weighted less than the deck screws likewise I multiplied the deck screws by two which means if you were slower on the deck screws you get penalized more so basically the deck screws are weighted the highest the headlocks are weighted a little bit less than that and then the nut busting torque is weighted way less than the other two factors I think in the order of importance on using these tools that’s kind of how it goes in real life all right so I’ll put those on the screen um I also multiplied by 100 so I could get a nice clean 0 to 100 score you’ll see um the xdt14 in addition to being ranked at the top of these it really is my favorite and the reason is you can see it’s the most beat up I’m using it on my bathroom remodel right now another channel for that coming up soon but it only has three modes and a self Tapper so when you’re in the middle of something I I I just really don’t want to be messing with all the features and functions on the xdt 19 and the 16 and the 40 volt models I like 3-speeds I usually have it on top speed and just feather the trigger with my finger but sometimes I do slow it down if I really want to be careful with something um so I like the the the balance of features and its Simplicity in the xdt14 it’s also not the most expensive number two on the list is actually the xdt16 and again that’s mostly over the xdt 19 because of the nut busting score um if you look at the headlock scores the xdt uh 16 um actually did a little bit worse than the xdt 19 um so if you’re just doing smaller Fasteners you might want to look at the 19 over the 16 but in the overall ranking it came second and then if you’re in the 40 volt line um you know definitely get the second gen if you got in early on the xgt line I would actually recommend upgrading to the second gen I wouldn’t always recommend getting the latest just because it’s the latest but I think in this case there’s enough of a difference uh it’s worth it I also want to give an honorable mention to the TD 173d Japanese model if you’re a big Makita fan like me this this is why you buy Makita tools it takes the great ergonomics it just notches it up even a little bit more um I think the ring light is fantastic if you’re working in dark spots I was working under my kitchen cabinets putting in a reverse osmosis filter that came in really handy um and it’s just uh man it’s it’s like everything you like Makita for even better in this tool you’re going to spend 200 plus dollars on eBay but if you’re a big Makita Fanboy I would recommend it uh but overall for everybody else xdt14 is my key pick guys I appreciate you watching my name is Jim with Philly fixed God bless you and I’ll see you on
